Some of the oldest known examples of prehistoric stone tools, such as those from the Lomekwi 3 site in Kenya, date back about 3.3 million years, predating the genus Homo. These tools, attributed to Australopithecus or another early hominin species, were significantly larger and cruder than later stone tools, suggesting that tool-making began earlier and was more widespread among different hominin species than previously thought. This discovery has reshaped our understanding of the cognitive abilities and technological innovations of early hominins.
