The original design has evolved as states have been added to the Union, with the flag today featuring 50 stars. The flag's design, while not definitively attributed, is often linked to Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress, who, according to family stories, sewed the first flag at the request of George Washington. However, historical evidence for this claim is considered by many historians to be insufficient.
