MATH EQUATIONS Cutting Board
The symbol "=" was invented by Welsh mathematician Robert Recorde in 1557. He introduced it in his book "The Whetstone of Witte" to avoid the tedious repetition of the phrase "is equal to." Recorde chose two parallel lines of equal length because, as he explained, "no two things can be more equal."
