The maps of Rohan and Mordor in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth is that their placement and geographic features were influenced by Tolkien's experiences and historical knowledge. For instance, the region of Rohan, with its vast plains and horse-riding culture, is reminiscent of the Anglo-Saxon and Norse traditions that Tolkien studied. Mordor, on the other hand, is geographically isolated by the mountains of Ephel Dúath and Ered Lithui, creating a natural fortress. Interestingly, the volcanic Mount Doom (Orodruin) was inspired by Tolkien's observation of active volcanoes during his travels in Italy, notably Mount Vesuvius. This direct observation of volcanic activity influenced the menacing landscape depicted in Mordor on the maps.
