MAP OF MORDOR & ROHAN Cutting Board
The names and characteristics of Rohan and Mordor were linguistically and culturally inspired by distinct real-world influences. Rohan, known for its horse-lords and vast grasslands, derives its name and many cultural elements from Old English and the Anglo-Saxons. In contrast, Mordor, with its dark, volcanic landscape and foreboding presence, takes its name from Old English and Old Norse roots, meaning "dark land" or "death land." This deliberate linguistic choice by Tolkien reflects his deep knowledge of and passion for philology, creating a rich and believable world with distinct cultures rooted in ancient languages.
