The Anduin River, the longest river in Middle Earth, originally flowed in a different direction. In Tolkien's early drafts, it was intended to flow westward into Beleriand, the region that existed in the First Age. After the cataclysmic events of the War of Wrath, when Beleriand was submerged, the Anduin was reimagined to flow southward, emptying into the Bay of Belfalas. This highlights how the geography of Middle-earth evolved over time in Tolkien's mythology.
