IWO JIMA FLAG RAISING Whiskey Glass
The iconic photo of the flag raising on Iwo Jima, captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945, is one of the most famous images from World War II. It depicts six U.S. Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. This photograph quickly became a symbol of victory and heroism in the U.S. and was used to boost war bond sales. Interestingly, the photo actually shows the second flag raising on that day; a smaller flag was first raised earlier, but it was replaced with a larger one to be visible to more troops on the island and to uplift their spirits.
