DEMOCRAT EMBLEM Whiskey Glass
The Democratic donkey symbol's widespread association with the Democratic Party was further solidified during the presidential elections of 1876. In that year, Thomas Nast used the donkey in a Harper's Weekly cartoon to depict the Democratic press, which he thought was treating the Republican Party unfairly. The cartoon featured a donkey clothed in a lion’s skin, scaring away other animals labeled as "NY Herald" and "NY Tribune." This was a play on Aesop's fable of the ass in a lion’s skin, further cementing the donkey's image as a symbol of the Democratic Party's craftiness and tenacity.
